Donor Profile: Vicki Spencer

August 18, 2011

Vicki Spencer has been a long-time supporter of Colorado Water Trust and we asked her to tell us why she supports our work. Vicki’s interest in water, natural resources and environmental law brought her to the University of Denver Sturm College of Law where she was instrumental in raising funds to start up the DU Water Law Review. She served as the Review’s first editor-in-chief and went on to work for the National Audubon Society in Wyoming and for Justice Gregory Hobbs at the Colorado Supreme Court. Her career eventually took her to Gunnison, practicing water law at Bratton Hill LLC and then on to the rural electric cooperative. She was recently appointed to the Upper Gunnison River Water Conservancy District where she hopes to make a contribution to water management in the Gunnison Valley.

What inspires you to support Colorado Water Trust?
While working with Audubon, I developed a deep commitment to conservation and protection of our natural resources and am inspired by the CWT’s vision and long-term approach to water conservation issues. By focusing on three legs - water acquisitions, water leases, and physical solutions - the CWT has been able to accomplish many of its goals.
What is your favorite Colorado Water Trust moment?
Meeting with the Executive Director to learn more about the CWT, the dedication of the board of directors, and helping to write grants to secure funding for various projects.
What is your favorite Colorado river or stream?
I’ve been hiking, backpacking, and fishing in Colorado’s mountains for more than 50 years, and my favorite body of water is the one that I am currently enjoying.
Tell us about your favorite river moment?
Many of us have experiences in our youth that stay with us throughout our lives.  One of my life-shaping experiences was participating in Outward Bound when I was in high school.  I will never forget the beauty and solitude of rafting the Yampa and Green rivers and the sense of accomplishment our group had when we learned how to work as a team to set our course, navigate through rapids, and reach our destination safely.
